Many Christmas preparation ask for mixed peels. Which is not difficult to make from scratches, ones you have great oranges or citruses. Once you try it, you’ll never go back to the store bought, believe me.
It’s quite difficult to find great oranges in UK. Usually those are really thin-skinned and tasteless. Luckily, we got our Organic Food Box from Birchwood Emporium last week, which included some really great oranges. I love oranges in general, I’m one of those people who could eat a lemon as an apple (peel included), if it’s tasty. You can just imagine how excited I was when I saw that oranges. Plus the plan of the week was to make sourdough panettone (recipe coming soon).
This was my very first time making mixed peels, and I have to say I’ll never buy these again. The taste of homemade peels is just s much better- they actually taste of real fruit, not candies.
As for their use, I made a citrus-butter by cutting them really in really small pieces and adding those to some melted butter. Leave the mixture in the fridge until it solidifies and then use it in your cake batter, it will make everything so much tastier. You could also use the mixed peel as it is, adding it into your bread dough, cakes batter or panettone!
“You cut up a piece of fruit, peel it, put it on a dish, and top it with something fun, and it feels like a real snack, instead of just walking down the street while peeling an orange and eating it: you’re not actually taking a minute to enjoy that snack.”
